NEW REVIEW: Jack Bantry - The Lucky Ones Died First (2017)

Posted by Chris Hall on Saturday, October 21, 2017, In : New Review
I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get sick of blood-drenched pulp horror.  You know the stuff, where some maniac, or beast, or ungodly threat or other, goes on a rampage, slaughtering everyone that stumbles into its pathway of destruction.

The seventies and eighties churned these pulp horror treats out at a ferocious pace.  Sadly, these days, such over-the-top titles are few and far between.  But every now and again, an author brave the backlash from literary snobs and will fling one out to...

NEW REVIEW: Jack Bantry - Splatterpunk's Not Dead (2016)

Posted by Chris Hall on Saturday, November 19, 2016, In : New Review
Jack Bantry’s ‘Splatterpunk Zine’ is something special.  It brought back that much missed and universally loved DIY zine ethos.  From the very first issue it bled the blood, sweat and tears of one man’s passion for the subject matter.

From the resulting popularity of Bantry’s cut-paste-and-staple zine, a proper paperback anthology was born.  Bantry’s ‘Splatterpunk’s Not Dead’ (2016) anthology offers up eight new horror stories, ranging from new upcoming names, to well-establi...

NEW REVIEW: Jack Bantry & Nathan Robinson - Atrocious Madness (2015)

The latest gore-drenched publication to come from the Splatterpunk Zine crew is the limited edition chapbook ‘Atrocious Madness’ (2015) that contains three previously published short stories by Jack Bantry and Nathan Robinson.

You know the score by now.  These publications are essential purchases for those that like their horror grim and guttural.  Stupendous cover art by Nick Gucker and Mike Dickinson too!

NEW REVIEW: Splatterpunk Zine - Issue 3

Posted by Chris Hall on Friday, May 22, 2015, In : New Review
As regulars to the site will know, I’ve been working my way through the back issues of Jack Bantry’s ‘Splatterpunk Zine’…and I have to say I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.  So far there’s not been a single dud story.  In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the zine is pretty much essential horror reading.  If you haven’t already got your grubby mitts on any of these zines, then you need to correct this error immediately.

Anyway, now added to DLS Reviews is a full in-depth diss...

NEW REVIEW: Splatterpunk Zine - Issue 2

Posted by Chris Hall on Saturday, April 4, 2015, In : New Review
Really enjoying working through the previous issues of Splatterpunk Zine.  Now dissected and reviewed on DLS Reviews is ‘Splatterpunk Zine – Issue 2’ (2012).  And I have to say that the first story in there, ‘Fair Trade’ by Jeff Strand, is an absolute belter.

If you’re not already buying each issue of this zine…then why the hell not?!  Absolutely great stuff.

DLS Reviews puts ‘Splatterpunk Zine’ on the dissection table

Posted by Chris Hall on Monday, February 23, 2015, In : New Review
Well DLS Reviews has undergone a very minor bit of surgery in order to accommodate a new addition to the site.  It’s something I’ve been meaning to add to DLS Reviews for a while now.  And now I’ve finally gotten around to doing it!  In a nutshell, the site no longer has the ‘Fear’ and ‘Skeleton’ menu links located along the Menu bar at the top.  Instead they’ve been replaced with the new menu link ‘Zines’.  Here you’ll be able to access the ‘FEAR Magazine’ and ‘Sk...

NEW REVIEW: Jack Ketchum & Lucky McKee - I'm Not Sam (2012)

Posted by Chris Hall on Saturday, January 24, 2015, In : New Review
I have to admit that I’m rather partial to Jack Ketchum’s work.  He’s got a knack for being able to pull us into his stories in mere seconds.  He can spin a yarn and keep us 100% mesmerised throughout.  And what does he do with that talent?  Why, he chooses to get under our skin and scare the living hell out of us.

Well normally anyway.  With the novella ‘I’m Not Sam’ (2012) which he co-wrote with fellow writer and director Lucky McKee, the approach is different.  It’s not so muc...
