NEW REVIEW: James Axler - Deathlands 18: Shockscape (1993)

Posted by Chris Hall on Thursday, February 26, 2015, In : New Review
Every time I start a new Deathlands novel I’m reminded how frigging much I love them!  For one reason or another, it’s been quite a while since I last read one of them.  So I thought I’d squeeze ‘Deathlands 18: Shockscape’ (1993) in between a bunch of horror novels I’ve got stacking up for review.  And why the hell not?

For those that’re not altogether familiar with the Deathlands series – if you like your ‘Mad Max’ (1979) style post-apocalyptic / dystopian fiction, then yo...

DLS Reviews puts ‘Splatterpunk Zine’ on the dissection table

Posted by Chris Hall on Monday, February 23, 2015, In : New Review
Well DLS Reviews has undergone a very minor bit of surgery in order to accommodate a new addition to the site.  It’s something I’ve been meaning to add to DLS Reviews for a while now.  And now I’ve finally gotten around to doing it!  In a nutshell, the site no longer has the ‘Fear’ and ‘Skeleton’ menu links located along the Menu bar at the top.  Instead they’ve been replaced with the new menu link ‘Zines’.  Here you’ll be able to access the ‘FEAR Magazine’ and ‘Sk...

NEW REVIEW: Graham Masterton - Community (2013)

Posted by Chris Hall on Friday, February 20, 2015, In : New Review
Second review of the day!  That’s what comes from going away and then having to catch-up with the reviews when you return.

So, next up we have Graham Masterton’s reasonably recent offering ‘Community’ (2013).  A supernatural tale shrouded in mystery that’s just damn entertaining from start to finish.  Let’s face it – the man knows how to tell a story.  And with ‘Community’ (2013) it’s no exception.

NEW REVIEW: Grace McCleen - The Offering (2015)

Posted by Chris Hall on Friday, February 20, 2015, In : New Review
I’ve just got back from a short break with the family.  A nice relaxing week enjoying good food, real ales, and some pleasant time being with the wife and kids.  And of course I got to read some more books.

So next to be added to DLS Reviews is Grace McCleen’s recent novel ‘The Offering’ (2015).  Not the most cheerful of tales it has to be said, this is some downbeat and misery-laced reading.  It also gives a healthy kick to the crotch of religion, which is never a bad thing in my opin...

NEW REVIEW: Monica J. O’Rourke - What Happens In The Darkness (2013)

Posted by Chris Hall on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, In : New Review
After reading Monica J. O’Rourke’s novel ‘What Happens In The Darkness’ (2013), unfortunately I have to admit that I came away bitterly disappointed.  The novel started off with a hardboiled post-apocalyptic premise that instantly got my attention.  Sadly, O’Rourke didn’t really maintain this initial intensity, and instead the novel gradually slipped into a mediocre post-apocalyptic vampire storyline intermingled with a ‘Blade’ (1998) style humans vs vampire war going on.

If yo...

NEW REVIEW: J.F. Gonzalez & Wrath James White - The Killings (2013)

Posted by Chris Hall on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, In : New Review
So, continuing with the theme of nasty novels courtesy of Sinister Grin Press, next up on the DLS Reviews autopsy table is J.F. Gonzalez and Wrath James White’s novel ‘The Killings’ (2013).  Yeah, you’ve guessed it – expect gratuitous violence, no-holds-barred gore, and plenty of stuff to get under your skin.  Cheers guys!
